Little River is flowing at 1,120 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.50 feet on the flow gauge. This is a record for the date based on 55 years of data. The prior record was 708 cfs set in 2010. The water temperature is 50.7 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River, is flowing very high at the gauge site in Sevierville. Flow there is 2,710 cfs, compared to the prior record for this date of 1,170 cfs, set in 1936. Median flow is 198 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,260 cfs at the gauge in Birdtown. That is yet another record for this date, which was 939 cfs set in 1967.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at a new record for this date at 277 cfs. The prior record was 274 cfs set in 2010.
At these flows, wading is not recommended in most streams.
If you go, prepare to fish heavily weighted nymphs, while standing near the bank, out of the strong current. High stick and hope for the best. Water temperatures are not bad in the low elevations. However, these are not good fly fishing conditions in the Smoky Mountains. Be careful.
The water levels may get worse before they recede, with more rain expected, especially tonight.
I wish I could give you a better fishing report. One bright spot is Friday. It was predicted to rain, but now that forecast has changed. Friday should be dry, warmer and partly cloudy.
The ground is saturated. Rainfall for the year is eleven inches above normal at the Knoxville Airport. I think the streams will recede slowly. I’m not sure what to expect this weekend. That depends on how much more rain we get, and where.
The long term weather forecast indicates less rain beginning Friday, extending through November 28th. There is a chance for rain on some of those days. A dry spell would be nice. I hope we get it.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
