Little River is flowing at 842 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.17 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 147 cfs. The water temperature is 47.3 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,650 cfs or 3.41 feet on the Sevierville gauge. Median flow is 199 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is rolling at 1,179 cfs, compared to median flow of 275 cfs. This is a record high flow for this date. The water temperature is 44.6 degrees.
Cataloochee Creek is also flowing at its record for this date at 292 cfs. The water temperature is 43.2 degrees.
This morning, you will find high water in most streams. The water is chilly in all streams right now. The rivers are slowly receding. Today they will warm a few degrees. Yesterday, Little River warmed by about 2 degrees before chilling overnight.
We consider a gauge reading of 2.5 feet at Little River to be on the high side of good. Right now the gauge reading is 3.17 feet. This gauge site is located in a wide and shallow spot on the river. Other areas, where the river is constricted, the current will be stronger and the water deeper.
These are not ideal fishing conditions but they will improve over time. Conditions tomorrow will be better than they are today.
If you go, pick your spots and be careful wading. I would use heavily weighted nymphs and streamers. Fishing will be easier on smaller, lower gradient streams. Anthony Creek is a good choice at times when we have high water. You might try the West or Middle Prongs of Little River.
If given a choice, I would go later, when the water is warmer. I would also choose tomorrow over today, as the water will recede further in the streams, and the water may be somewhat warmer.
Fishing could be fair, good or slow today. The only way to find out is go.
Views from the newly opened section of the Foothills Parkway are spectacular. Today and tomorrow will be perfect days to make the drive. Traffic may be heavy. The older section from Walland to Chilhowee Lake is another beautiful drive with panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains from one side, and views of the foothills in our County from the other. The total distance of the two sections is about 33 miles.
