Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:52 am, the temperature outside is 24.4 degrees.
At 4:15 am, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred near Decatur, Tennessee That was followed by a 3.3 magnitude quake a few minutes later. The first was the second strongest earthquake on record in East Tennessee. A stronger 4.7 happened near Maryville in 1973.
I slept through the whole thing. Paula was awake, reading on a sofa in our loft, outside the bedroom. She said it felt like someone was pushing the sofa in one direction. I don’t think she felt the second quake.
Today will be partly sunny and warmer. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy and warm. Rain arrives Friday and will last through Saturday night. It will be fairly warm this weekend.

Little River is flowing at 507 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.69 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 266 cfs. The water temperature is 41.9 degrees and falling this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 943 cfs, 2.76 feet and that compares to median flow of 341 cfs.
Oconaluftee River at the Birdtown gauge is flowing at 698 cfs, 2.16 feet, compared to median flow of 469 cfs. The water temperature is 39.2 degrees and falling.
Tellico River’s flow at Tellico Plains is 584 cfs, 2.32 feet, compared to median flow of 204 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 128 cfs, 2.68 feet, and that compares to median flow of 87 cfs. The water temperatures is 35.6 degrees and falling.
As you can see, the streams are colder in the higher elevations. It is cold out there right now, so the stream temperatures are falling. We will see them warm some today and through the weekend. Fishing will improve some, every day.
The streams are also flowing high, so, be careful wading if you go.
I would wait until later today, to give the streams time to warm. And, I would fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Fishing will be slow for a while and improve through the weekend. The warmer the water becomes, above 40 degrees, the better the fishing will be.
Nymphs and streamers, weighted to get them down, may entice some trout to take your fly. Watch for a blue wing olive hatch. If you see them, and trout feeding on the surface, tie on a dry fly or emerger to match the adults you see. They may be between sizes #16 to #20.
Don’t forget about our Free event that will be held at the shop Saturday. Walter Babb and Jack Gregory will be tying flies and talking about fly fishing. They will begin at 10 am and be there for your enjoyment until 2 pm. Mike McConkey will be cooking and serving free pancakes to you.
The event is free. All you have to do is show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
