Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:06 am, the temperature outside is 26.8 degrees.
Today will be fairly warm with a chance for rain. Up to one quarter of an inch is possible today. Rain will continue tonight in Townsend. Snow showers or freezing rain are predicted in the higher elevations and some lower elevation towns tonight.
Many roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are open. Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) appears to be closed.
Due to the partial US Government shutdown, the Park’s Road Twitter page will not be updated. If conditions require a road closure, we will not be made aware of it on Twitter until the shutdown is over.
The non-profit Great Smoky Mountains Association is funding the main visitor centers so they will be open through January 1st. That probably means Oconaluftee and Sugarland visitor centers will be open. I don’t know if the Cades Cove center or others will be open.

Little River is flowing at 884 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.22 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 271 cfs. The water temperature is 44.4 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,200 cfs, 3.82 feet, and that compares to median flow of 368 cfs.
Oconaluftee River if flowing at 1,140 cfs at the Birdtown gauge. Median flow there for this date is 482 cfs. The water temperature is 41 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 878 cfs, 2.93 feet, compared to median flow of 213 cfs for this date.
Flow at Cataloochee Creek is 310 cfs, 6.27 feet, compared to median flow of 86 cfs. The water temperature is 40.3 degrees this morning.
The streams are flowing very high. Wading is dangerous in many areas. Be careful if you go. You could stand near the bank and “high stick” nymphs or streamers and possibly catch a trout or two. These are not ideal fishing conditions.
Tonight, the rain may change to frozen precipitation, causing some roads to close in the Park. So, we won’t know what to expect tomorrow.
It will be sunny Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It will be cold at night, especially in the higher elevations, so some roads may close due to water on the road re-freezing.
We will be open tomorrow morning, Christmas Eve, from 9 am until noon. We will be closed Christmas Day.
The views of the higher elevation mountains were incredible yesterday. Many were solid white. Some gateway towns adjacent to the Park are full of holiday visitors. Townsend was fairly active yesterday too. We were busy at the shop.
My plan is to place orders for the fly tying department today, so our suppliers will have orders waiting for them after Christmas. We will hopefully be first in line. I think most of them will be closed tomorrow.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
