Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:59 am, the temperature outside is 28.8 degrees.
The weather forecasters missed it yesterday. The predicted high temperature, according to the National Weather Service was 55 degrees. It was warmer in Townsend, 64 degrees at 2:39 pm.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 50’s, dipping to below freezing tonight. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be warmer. Friday through the weekend will be very warm. The only day of possible rain is Thursday, this week.
Little River is flowing at 328 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.33 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 383 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees this morning.
Yesterday, the water temp at Little River fell to 45 degrees, then rose to 49 degrees later in the day.
Flows are great for fishing in the Smokies. No problem there. Water temperatures will be the limiting factor through at least Wednesday.
If you go fishing early this week, go later in the day when the water is warmer.
There are some bugs hatching at times but I did not hear of any spectacular activity this weekend. Be prepared. I would have, at the very minimum, some Parachute Adams dry flies in my box in sizes #12 through #16. That fly mimics many early Spring hatches.
Be prepared to fish with nymphs. A Pheasant Tail is a good pattern to use most any time of the year. Other nymphs may work well too.
I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again today. This coming weekend may offer some of the best fishing we’ve had so far this year. It will be warm. The water will warm. Trout and aquatic insects will be active. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
Next week looks good too, except for the predicted rain. Normal rain showers would be fine. Heavy rain would not.
TVA is still churning water through the dams, trying to lower the lakes, in anticipation for Spring rain. Today they are still sluicing at Norris, Douglas and Cherokee dams. They are sluicing at many other dams in Tennessee. They are still spilling at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky.
Knoxville native Ott DeFoe won the Bassmaster Classic held in Knoxville this weekend. Evidently, the Classic is the Super Bowl of bass tournaments. He weighed in 49 pounds between 15 bass, during the three day tournament. You can see him and read the story on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
I don’t know Ott but congratulations to him. They say he is a very likeable guy and obviously a very good professional bass fisherman. Winning that tournament is a big deal.
Fly fishermen are preparing for Spring and we have been busy here. And now, fly fishermen can enjoy fishing in the Southern Appalachian mountain streams. Finally, the streams are flowing near normal, which has been rare this year. When the tailwaters get back to normal, everyone is going to be happy.
The lakes are receding and there are no heavy rain events predicted that I can find.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
