Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:03 am, the temperature outside is 43.0 degrees.
Today will be warm, in the mid-60’s. It is going to rain today and tonight. We may get half of an inch or more, especially where scattered thunderstorms occur. It will be warm again tonight, but a little cooler tomorrow. The long term forecast indicates we will enjoy warmer temperatures through early April.
Little River is flowing at 205 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.00 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 351 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning. Yesterday the water temperature peaked at 52 degrees.
Water temperatures are trending up. That is an excellent fishing condition, favorable to us and the trout. The cold nights are gone. Trout activity is will to be high.
Our fishing could be spoiled temporarily by rain today and tonight. Though overall, no heavy rain is expected, thunderstorms in some watersheds could stain the water and raise the levels. After tonight, the chance for rain is very low until next Sunday.
This is going to be a good fishing week.
You may see Blue Quills, Blue Wing Olives, possibly Hendricksons or March Browns, and other aquatic insects on the water. I have not heard anyone say they saw significant hatches over the past few days.
That does not mean that trout will not be taking dry flies. I would have some Parachute Adams dries in my box, in several sized, but mainly #14 and #16.
Wet flies may produce for you. They can be used as a dropper off your dry fly or fished alone or in tandem. A Hare’s Ear wet fly is a good choice.
Nymphs will work for sure. Make mine a Quasimodo Pheasant Tail please. I like the shape and the copper bead. You could high stick one or two or drift them under a strike indicator.
TVA is still sluicing at Norris, Cherokee and Douglas Dams. But, it appears the average outflow will be reduced today, with more reduction tomorrow and the day after at Norris Dam. TVA appears to be cutting back the flow at Douglas and slightly at Cherokee dams over the next couple of days. The lakes are receding, as planned.
Center Hill and Cumberland Lakes are still at a high level, above full pool and way above Winter pool. But, they are receding every day thanks to sluicing at Center Hill and spilling at Wolf Creek.
It is daybreak now and cloudy. The sun working its way over the mountain tops. This may be a good fishing day if the rain is not heavy.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
