Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:04 am, the temperature outside is 38.0 degrees.
Today will be another beautiful fly fishing day in the Smoky Mountains. It will be partly sunny with a high temperature around 70 degrees. Tomorrow will be a carbon copy of today, except maybe a couple of degrees warmer, and it will be breezy at times.
Rain will move into the area Saturday night and last through Sunday morning. Sunday will be cooler, in the low 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 196 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.97 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 314 cfs. The water temperature is 50.7 degrees this morning.
Good stream flows and excellent water temperatures are driving the very good fishing we have now. Trout in the Smokies are taking dry flies, nymphs and wet flies.
Try a Parachute Adams dry fly in sizes #14 through #16. You might consider dropping a small Bead Head Pheasant Tail nymph off your dry fly. Or, drop a wet fly off the dry. A Hare’s Ear wet fly is a good choice.
These flies would be my choice today and through the weekend if you are fishing in the Southern Appalachian freestone streams.
TVA is still sluicing at Norris and Cherokee dams, though the discharge has been reduced. Larry and John floated the Clinch this week and did well. They are not sluicing at Douglas Dam. Floating and fly fishing may be an option this weekend.
The lakes are being lowered to TVA’s preferred level for this time of the year. Some are getting close. Maybe we’ll have some tailwater wade fishing opportunities very soon. I hope that happens this weekend.
Daniel and I got a tour of the newly remodeled event center at Tremont Lodge yesterday. We are moving Fly Tyers Weekend back to the lodge this year. It will be held November 2nd and 3rd. Fly Tyers Weekend is Free. We usually have over 40 different tyers demonstrating in shifts, both days. It is a big event. Everyone enjoys Fly Tyers Weekend.
You can read more by CLICKING HERE. If you attend, book your reservations by phone. Tell them you are attending Fly Tyers Weekend to get a 25% discount on your room.
The more rooms booked for the event, the lower our costs will be to rent the event center. We are partnering with Tremont for the long haul, making Fly Tyers Weekend an ongoing event in our new home.
CLICK HERE to visit the Tremont Lodge website. We also have the lodge reserved for Fly Tyers Weekend in 2020.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
