Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:08 am, the temperature outside is 29 degrees.
Yesterday was cool in the foothills, and colder in the mountains. On my way home from work, I saw hoarfrost on the mountains visible from our house.
It will be cool again today, with a high in the low 50’s, dropping to the upper 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be warmer and then it is going to get really warm through the end of the week and into next week. Beginning Thursday, highs will be in the 70’s through the weekend.
The long term forecast through April 15th, predicts highs in the 70’swith lows in the 50’s through the period beginning Thursday. We have a chance for rain several of those days.
Fishing is going to be good for a while, barring any high water.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.25 feet on the gauge. Median flow for the date is 393 cfs. The water temperature is 46.2 degrees and falling.
The streams were rising quickly yesterday morning when I wrote this report. They peaked later and receded to a reasonable fishing and wading level. The water temperature fell during the day with only a short “up tick” during the early afternoon. I talked to a couple of anglers who told me fishing was slow for them. When water temperatures are falling, fishing is often slow.
We should see the water temperatures begin to rise later today, after the sun is on the water. They will dip tonight then warm further as the week progresses. I believe, fishing will be good to excellent by Wednesday, and maybe before. I think fishing will be fair today.
Use nymphs early. Get them down. The water temperature is falling rapidly this morning. The trout will be somewhat sluggish. Later today you might want to try dry flies. Tie on a Parachute Adams in sizes #14 to #16.
You will increase your odds by dropping a small bead head nymph off your dry. You may want to try a wet fly. A Hare’s Ear wet fly is a good choice.
Today may be a good day to fish a tailwater for trout. Check the TVA website at Norris Dam. See if their generation schedule works with yours. The sluicing to lower Norris, Cherokee and Douglas lakes has come to a halt. Now, at those dams, generation schedules will determine the flow.
You will see sluicing at Center Hill Dam today, and spilling at Wolf Creek Dam.
Lowland river fly fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfishes will improve later this week. Keep that option in mind.
Trout fishing in Little River through Townsend is good.
Lake fishing should be much better later this week.
Overall, the fishing news is good news for a change. Spring is officially here. It is April again. The daylight hours continue to get longer. The freeze last night is normal in early April but I don’t see that happening again for the next two weeks.
We should all be happy. I am.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
