Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun is shining brightly on this pretty spring morning. Today looks like it is going to be a great day to be outside.
The weather forecast for today is dry. Rain is coming late Thursday and all weekend. Hopefully it falls slow enough not to mess the fishing too bad.
Water conditions on Little River are very good. This morning the gauge is reading 2.22 feet or 283 c.f.s. This is a bit higher than the daily normal of 238 c.f.s. The river is flowing clear.
Water temperatures had dropped a few days ago but they have stabilized. This morning the reading is just over 60F.
Waders or no waders is a personal choice, especially this time of year. Early on a cool morning having warm dry legs is nice. Late in the day when the sun is shining and the air is warm I think I would forego the waders.
Going off the numbers it looks like fishing should be very good today in the mountains. I expect nymphs will work better early in the day but as everything warms up I would switch to dry flies. The hatches have been lighter in color, tan to yellow. Light Cahill, Smoky Mountain Candy, Yellow Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, and yellow sally patterns.
There is all kinds of possibilities for where to go. The Middle Prong of Little River (Tremont) is fishing well. Elkmont is also very good.
The Townsend Heritage Festival was this last weekend. That usually signals the time when the Park starts keeping Cades Cove closed till 10am on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Verify with the Park before going if you want to get to Abrams early.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
