Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. Rain is falling here in Townsend. So far it is just a light drizzle. Rain is expected to fall all day and tomorrow.
Rain is in the forecast today and tomorrow....and then sunshine at the beginning of the week. Cooler temperatures are coming early next week also with highs in the upper 60's.
Water levels are on the rise. at 8:30 the Little River Gauge is giving a reading of 2.22 feet or 283 c.f.s. This is higher than the daily normal of 232 c.f.s. I expect that water clarity is becoming off color. Tremont is likely to be pretty muddy.
Water temperatures are at 63F. We have cool weather coming early next week and that is going to cause a drop in water temperatures.
We are watching water levels closely this morning. This time of year it doesn't take a large quantity of rain to cause the streams to get high quickly. Keep an eye on the weather radar and the stream gauge when making your decision.
Rainy weather isn't ideal for dry fly fishing. It is hard to keep a Parachute Adams floating when it is being assaulted with water from both top and bottom.
Nymphs are going to be your best choice today. Fish heavily weighted nymphs that are going to get deep. A long rod will be a help, allowing you to stay out of the water.
Streamers could be a good choice today. As water levels rise food will be stirred up and sometimes the trout go on the feed. A streamer doesn't require a dead drift so the swifter water can be an advantage.
A rainy day will be a good day for me to order fly tying materials. Byron has added quite a few new items for Euro style fishing. He brought in Hanak hooks, jig hooks from Umpqua, a lot of slotted tungsten beads, and Polish Quills from Nature's Spirit. We have outgrown the rack that he had allocated for it. I'm going to stare at the wall for a bit and see how I can shuffle stuff around to make it all fit. I'm admittedly a bit OCD so to keep my brain happy I want product to line up. There is usually some combination of display that eventually makes it all work.
Remember that there is still space in the Aquatic Entomology for Anglers Class. Just give a call!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
