Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:01 am, the temperature outside is 68 degrees.
Storms blew through the area late yesterday. A big strong thunderstorm was bearing down on Townsend last night, but it fizzled prior to arrival. We got .10 inches of rain. The Knoxville Airport got .46 inches.
Rainfall at the Airport is 14.67 inches above normal for the year.
It is going to be drier for a few days. There is only a low chance for precipitation through Thursday. The chance for rain increases some through the weekend. I think we can count on good stream flows, without high water for a while. High temperatures through the week and weekend will be in the mid to upper 80’s. Lows will drop to the 60’s at night.
Little River is flowing at 253 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.11 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 125 cfs. The water temperature is 68.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 382 cfs, 1.94 feet, compared to median flow of 262 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 713 cfs, 2.20 feet, and that compares to median flow of 366 cfs for this date.
Tellico River is flowing at 276 cfs, 1.58 feet, compared to median flow of 123 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 135 cfs, 2.71 feet, compared to median flow of 67 cfs.
As you can see, flows are excellent, and in some cases, quite a bit higher than we normally see during the Summer months. That is great news.
Fishing is going to be good this week.
Be mindful, that the water temperatures in the lowest elevations are going to be warm later each day. Fish the mid to high elevation streams.
Dry flies and nymphs will both work. I would lean toward terrestrials, beetles, ants and inchworms. It is a good idea to use a black foam beetle as your dry fly, with a Green Weenie dropper. You might also try Yellow Stimulators, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Rob’s Hellbender or Smoky Mountain Candy dry flies. Nymph selection should include Prince, Hare’s Ear, Tellico and Pheasant Tail.
The lowland rivers are flowing well. Try poppers and floating foam flies for smallmouth bass and redeye bass. Fish the shaded areas of streams. Go early or late for better fishing.
Lake fishing with flies will be good early or late when the sun is off the water. Bass and bluegill are taking poppers, streamers and Rubber Legged Dragons.
TVA is generating around the clock at Cherokee and Douglas dams. They are sluicing at Norris Dam. They are generating midnight to midnight at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky. The lake levels at several impoundments are at the top of TVA’s operating guide. They don’t want to be over that number so they are flushing water through the dams.
I am hoping they will cut back on the flows so more people can fish the tailwaters. Tailwater anglers have had a tough year due to high water. When the flows are friendly, fishing has been very good.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
