Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:04 am, the temperature outside is 69.3 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the low 80’s. Rain is likely today. The chance is low this morning but increases into the afternoon. We may get a thunderstorm this afternoon. There is a 50% chance for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and a 60% chance for the same Sunday.
If you are fishing in this area today, watch for quickly rising water. Some of these thunderstorms may become strong to severe, with high winds and localized flooding.
A small but persistent thunderstorm dropped about four inches of rain in parts of the Smokies late yesterday. A tree fell on a car and killed a man. You can read the story about this storm and the casualty on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Several roads in the Smoky Mountains were closed yesterday, including US Highway 441, between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge and Little River Road from Metcalf Bottoms to Townsend. The roads are now open.
The heavy rain missed the Little River watershed. Little River is flowing at 193 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.93 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 67.3 degrees this morning.
The heavy rain did affect the Little Pigeon River. It rose to 4 feet and over 2,000 cfs, late yesterday. The river has been receding all night. Currently, flow is 774 cfs, 2.53 feet, compared to median flow of 226 cfs at the Sevierville gauge.
The Oconaluftee River was affected by rain too. Flow at the Birdtown gauge is 476 cfs, 1.81 feet, compared to median flow of 265 cfs.
Other streams in the Park are flowing above median flow today.
Most streams are fishable today. Fishing is very good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Water levels are excellent in some cases, though the Little Pigeon is flowing fairly high.
Lowland river fishing is good. You may find some stained water in some, where farmland tributaries enter the rivers. Otherwise, smallmouth bass and sunfishes will be taking poppers, foam floating flies and streamers. Nymphs might work well too.
Lake fishing is fine when the sun is off the water. Use poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and Rubber Legged Dragons. Watch for approaching thunderstorms and get to the ramp if one appears.
There are some good flows on a few of the tailwaters today, especially if you are floating. And, there may be some wade fishing opportunities for you. Visit the TVA website from the links below before you go.
Daniel and I saw the new Fishpond gear yesterday, which will be available in November. There are three new vests, one for men, one for women and one for youths. They have great features and they look good.
The waxed cotton luggage and other pieces that were made from brown waxed cotton, will now be made from a heavier dark olive waxed cotton. I love the old waxed cotton pieces, and I have three. I was disappointed they were changing the color until I saw the new pieces yesterday. They look awesome. I guess it was time for a change.
And, we saw and got to cast some new Sage fly rods. The Light Line Sage is coming back, with new technology. These rods are perfect for trout fishing. Sage also has a new streamer rod, that is an amazing casting machine. Sage is also introducing some new “Classic” trout reels that you will love.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
