Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 7:04 am, the temperature outside is 70.0 degrees.
It is overcast this morning. I don’t see any fog. The Smoky Mountains are clearly visible from my office at the shop. Today’s high temperature will be in the mid-80’s. We have a 40% chance for thunderstorms today. It may be sunny at times today.
Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.72 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 120 cfs. The water temperature is 69.4 degrees this morning.
Though Little River is flowing below median flow today, the other streams that have USGS gauges are flowing higher.
Hopefully we will get some rain this week.
Fishing is good. As the stream levels drop, stealth becomes even more essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Wearing camouflage clothing is a good idea. You will catch more trout if you are not seen by them.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. I would choose terrestrial patterns. You probably know, if you have read this report lately, a black foam beetle with a Green Weenie dropper is a good combination if you believe me. That is what I would start with.
If it remains cloudy, fishing will be best.
Lowland rivers are flowing low, especially Little River and maybe others. I would say, fishing a lowland river will be fair today. Of course, cloud cover helps and we may have that often today. A rain storm could stain the water.
I would use poppers or foam floating flies. If the sun is shining, find shaded areas to fish.
Lake fishing may be good. Watch for storms! I would use poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or Rubber Legged Dragons.
There are a few tailwater fishing opportunities today, especially if you are boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can find fishable tailwaters. TVA continues to generate at Cherokee Dam, around the clock. Maybe they will cut back the flows soon.
I am looking outside right now, wishing I was fishing. I love cloudy days. I hope this one stays that way, for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
