Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun is beginning to peak out from behind the clouds this morning. It is fairly cool at 74F this morning and shouldn't be as hot today.
The weather forecast is calling for another round of afternoon thunderstorms. Keep an eye on the sky and an eye on the water. A downpour upstream can cause water levels to rise rapidly. You won't necessarily need to run for the car but be sure that you are on the trail/road side of the stream so you can get out if the water floods.
Water levels are greatly improved this morning. The gauge on Little River is reading 2.04 feet or 190 c.f.s. This is higher than the daily normal of 109 c.f.s. The streams are flowing mostly clear.
Water temperatures are still a little warm but not too bad. The gauge reads 71.9 F. Higher elevations will be cooler. Fishing will be best early in the day or late in the afternoon. Mid-day isn't as good.
Anglers continue to do well with dry flies. A customer was in the this morning and said that the Smoky Mountain Candy was the ticket for him. Yellow stonefly patterns like Yellow Stimulators, Neversink Caddis, Doculator, and Rob's Hellbenders are all good choices. Elk Hair Caddis and Parachute are solid bets too.
Nymphs can be very effective. You can go really heavy and dredge the bottom with a tungsten jig style or light with a green weenie or pheasant tail.
Ernie and Joyce are here this morning giving the Trout in the Classroom tank an overhaul. It's being totally cleaned...filters cleaned and hoses replaced. All this is in preparation for the next batch of eggs that will be coming soon.
We are getting the Shop ready for fall. T-Shirts are coming in. A huge shipment from Simms has already arrived. There is new rods and reels from Sage. Fishpond will be coming in around the middle of November. New gear is always fun and exciting.
If you head out to the river today have a good time and keep an eye on the weather. Thunderstorms can pop up without notice but I don't think that the chance of them is enough to keep you from going.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
