Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:19 am, the temperature outside is 71.1 degrees.
It is going to be cooler, with a high temperature today around 80 degrees and a high tomorrow in the upper 70’s. Lows at night will be 66 to 67 degrees both days. There is a chance for showers and thunderstorms today and tonight. That chance becomes greater tomorrow and Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 58.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.47 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 97 cfs. The water temperature is 73 degrees at the low elevation USGS site near Townsend.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 271 cfs, 1.68 feet, and that compares to median flow of 180 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 327 cfs, 1.63 feet, compared to median flow of 220 cfs. The water temperature is 68.0 degrees this morning.
Tellico River is flowing at 121 cfs, 1.02 feet, compared to median flow of 92 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 63.0 cfs, 2.39 feet, compared to median flow of 52 cfs.
The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish the mid to high elevations where the water is cooler.
Many streams in the Smokies are flowing above normal today. Little River is one exception. That trend should continue this week as more rain is expected.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Terrestrial patterns are good choices. The Green Weenie is one fly I would certainly use as a sub-surface pattern.
It is expected to be cloudy today, which bodes well for fly fishing on the lakes and lowland rivers. I would use poppers and foam floating flies on the lakes and lowland rivers. Also, try a Puglisi Threadfin Shad, Rubber Legged Dragon or Wooly Buggers on the lakes.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at many dams today. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
We are busy at the shop, taking care of customers. We have an excellent staff, ready to help you. There are always four to six of us there each day.
I will be ordering fly tying materials today and tomorrow, and installing new LED light fixtures in the fly tying department. Lighting is a very important component to success in our business. Keeping merchandise in stock is another. Being friendly and helpful is essential. Giving you a clean and organized store to shop in is something we are all working on. We are doing all of that better than ever.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
