Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:09 am, the temperature outside is 69.8 degrees.
Heavy rain fell in some areas nearby yesterday. We got .48 inches in Townsend, while the Knoxville Airport reported 1.21 inches.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the mid to upper 70’s. We have a 40% to 50% chance for more rain today with a 50% chance tomorrow. There is a high chance for thunderstorms Wednesday morning.
Little River is flowing at 228 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.16 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 100 cfs. The water temperature is 70.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 628 cfs, 2.29 feet, compared to median flow of 198 cfs.
Very little if any rain fell in the Oconaluftee River watershed yesterday. Flow is currently 278 cfs, 1.52 feet, compared to median flow of 217 cfs for this date. The water temperature is 67.3 degrees this morning.
Tellico River is flowing at 110 cfs, .97 feet, compared to median flow of 89 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 53.1 cfs, 2.33 feet, compared to median flow of 51 cfs. The water temperature is 63.1 degrees.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or above median flow today. More rain is predicted over the next three days. There may be times when the water is stained through the period. Otherwise, water levels are good, especially for late August.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations, but fine in the higher elevation streams.
Unless you happen to be fishing where heavy rain is affecting the stream where you are, fishing in the Smokies will be good over the next few days. It will be mostly cloudy today and tomorrow, which will benefit you.
Lowland river fishing has improved due to higher flows, though there is a chance you will find stained water in some of them at times through Wednesday. Smallmouth bass will take poppers and foam floating flies.
Lake fishing with flies will be good due to the expected cloud cover. You should be able to entice smallmouth and largemouth bass with poppers and foam floating flies. If those flies do not work, switch to a streamer or move. I like Wooly Buggers or Puglisi Threadfin Shad patterns for bass. Try poppers or Rubber Legged Dragons for panfish and other species.
I found a couple of trout tailwater fishing opportunities. Check the TVA website from the links below to determine your strategy today.
Labor Day weekend is fast approaching. We will be busy this weekend.
I ordered a new Croakies floor display and enough eyeglass retainers to fill it. That will all arrive Wednesday, and I’ll have it out on the floor in our sunglasses department by the weekend. I spent a lot of time and money on our sunglasses department this year, and those efforts have paid off. We plan to bring in Smith Optics next Spring, to keep the department growing.
I spent yesterday ordering fly tying materials. I do that every Sunday and Monday, replenishing what we sold the week before. Orders placed on Sunday or Monday arrive before the next weekend. Then, the whole process starts over.
I am also installing more lighting in that department. I will install another LED track light today, and another one tomorrow, for a total of three new tracks with three lights each. That is making a huge difference in the department. Our fly tying department is well stocked and business is good. A big Whiting Farms order should arrive today or tomorrow.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
