Be stealthy and hide from the trout as much as possible. You will catch more trout if you do.
Fish the mid to higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for temperatures in the 60’s.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. A black foam beetle with a Green Weenie dropper is a good combination right now. Other dries and nymphs will produce for you.
Lowland river fishing is probably fair and maybe better. Fish the shaded areas with foam floating flies and poppers.
The lakes will be crowded today. Go early or late. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and Dragons will catch bass and panfish. Cast to the shady banks.
Check the TVA website from the links below, to see if your favorite tailwater is fishable today.
We will be busy today at the shop. Business will slow at some point, due to the college football games. We are especially slow when the University of Tennessee games begin. However, this weekend we will have more out-of-town visitors, due to the holiday.
Our fly tying department is growing quickly and I am adding new materials and tools every week. We have one of the larger fly tying departments you will find. I spent all day yesterday, receiving orders from our suppliers. Today, I’ll do more of that and start ordering again. I order from Wapsi, our largest supplier, every week to replenish what sold the week before. I usually order every other week from our other suppliers.
Summer fly tying business is usually slower than it is in the Winter months. This Summer, fly tying is our 4th highest volume department, behind flies, waders and fly rods.
What makes that even more astounding, only one third of our customers buy fly tying materials and tools. Also, our fly tying department uses only 10% of our total space, 700 square feet. That may change soon, probably next year. We’ll have to tear out some walls.
You may notice, we package our spooled materials. That takes time, my time. But, it keeps the threads, wires, tinsels and ribbing clean and fresh. It also speeds things up at check out, because we print our own labels with bar codes for each package and you know exactly what you are buying. Everything is hanging on the wall, where you can see it. We have shopping baskets in the department for your convenience.
I have a passion for our fly tying department. I have some other friends who own fly shops, and they share my passion. One is Jim Mauries, who owns Fly South in Nashville. Jim and I used to fish together, when I lived in the Music City. He is a good guy and that is an awesome fly shop. I learned much about fly fishing and fly tying from Jim.
To our customers and friends in Florida and coastal Georgia, be prepared and be safe.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
