Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:59 am, the temperature outside is 66.0 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the mid-80’s. Tonight, the temperature will drop to the mid 60’s. No rain is expected today.
Little River is flowing at 55.3 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.45 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 82 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is still flowing above normal at 202 cfs, 1.52 feet, compared to median flow of 152 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is barely flowing above normal at 212 cfs, 1.35 feet, compared to median flow of 208 cfs. The water temperature there is 66.5 degrees.
Tellico River is also flowing just a bit above normal for this date, at 94.8 cfs, .89 feet, compared to median flow of 86 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 42.8 cfs, 2.26 feet, compared to median flow of 47 cfs. The water temperature is 61.3 degrees.
Most streams are flowing near normal. Little River is flowing lower. Water temperatures are on the warm side in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s.
Trout will be hiding in choppy water, riffles, plunge pools and runs, or near other cover. Stealth is very important to your success. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. I would use terrestrial patterns or yellow dry flies that resemble a Yellow Sally Stonefly. A Green Weenie is a good sub-surface pattern to use.
Fish the lowland rivers early or late, or find shaded areas to fish during the day. Poppers or foam floating flies would be my choice.
The lakes may be crowded today. Go early.

We had another busy day at the shop yesterday. It is a holiday weekend so that was expected. It seems less people are fishing right now, but more are shopping. I suppose we are all waiting for cooler, wetter weather and better fishing.
We have some new neighbors who moved here from Colorado. We like them a lot. Last night, we had a cookout at their house. Though our driveways are almost directly across the street, we are probably about an eighth of a mile from each other. We had a big tray and some flowers to take with us, so we drove the Gator.
We live in a subdivision. Our road and driveways are gravel. Our lots are large, 10 acres to 25 acres. It is quiet in here. They love living here and so do we. David is planning to take up fly fishing. He loves shooting too. He says he shoots occasionally since they moved here but I have never heard shots. I am probably at work when he does that. This has been a busy year for me.
They probably think I’m nuts, starting work at 5 am. They are both retired and younger than me.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
