Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:14 am, the temperature outside is 72.5 degrees.
The high temperature yesterday was 97 degrees at the Knoxville Airport, which is about 20 miles to our east. That tied a record for the date in 1998. The normal high for the date is 83 degrees. Last year, on the date, the high was 90 degrees.
Today will be warm, in the upper 80’s. We have a chance for thunderstorms today. Sunday will be hot and sunny once again.
Little River is flowing at 34.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.31 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is a very warm 73.6 degrees, at the low elevation USGS site in the Park, near Townsend. The river was rising earlier this morning. We got some rain somewhere in the watershed overnight. Now the river is receding.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 99.4 cfs, 1.19 feet, compared to median flow of 142 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing closer to normal at 166 cfs, 1.21 feet, compared to median flow of 196 cfs. The water temperature is 68.7 degrees.
Tellico River is also flowing close to median flow at 69 cfs or .73 feet. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek got some rain yesterday afternoon. Flow is 37.5 cfs, 2.22 feet, and that compares to median flow of 45 cfs.
Some streams are flowing unusually low, while others in the Smokies are flowing near normal.
They are all warm in the low elevations and they will be very warm later today. Fish the higher elevation streams where the water is cooler. Look for water temps in the 60’s.
Stay hidden from the trout if you can. Dress to blend with the forest. Dry flies and nymphs are working. I would use a foam beetle dry and a Green Weenie dropper. Fish the broken water, preferably, in the shade.
Lowland rivers are for the most part flowing low. You might catch smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfishes in the deeper pools. Fish the shaded areas with poppers or foam floating flies. Streamers or nymphs might work too.
There are some trout tailwater fishing opportunities available to you today. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see if TVA’s generation schedule works with yours.
