Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:14 am, the temperature outside is 45.3 degrees.
It will be cool today with a high in the low to mid-60’s. Showers are likely later today with a tenth to a quarter of an inch possible. The rain will continue tonight, with new precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Saturday will be warmer, in the mid 70’s, with low chance for rain. Showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday night, continuing into Sunday. Sunday’s high temperature should be in the low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 46.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.27 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 87 cfs. The water temperature is 53.4 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing near normal at 137 cfs, 1.27 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 144 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 169 cfs, 1.22 feet, compared to median flow of 207 cfs. The water temperature is 51.6 degrees at the Birdtown guage.
Tellico River is flowing at 46.5 cfs, .63 feet, compared to median flow of 79 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 33.6 cfs, 2.19 feet, compared to median flow of 42 cfs. The water temperature is 47.7 degrees.
Streams are flowing well and water temperatures are good, especially in the low to mid elevations. The high elevations streams are chilly this morning. It will be mostly cloudy today and tomorrow, which is beneficial for fly fishing in these clear waters. We will see water temperatures rise tomorrow and Sunday, which is fine.
The leaf change is late. It is happening now in the low elevations. Leaves have been falling, especially in the higher elevations.
You will likely find rising water tomorrow morning. That is good, as long as the water does not rise too much and the streams are not stained. Take a rain jacket with you today and tomorrow.
Nymphs will work and dry flies may produce too. I would plan of using nymphs.
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency should be stocking Little River with trout today, unless they did it yesterday. Most of the lowland rivers that are usually stocked outside the Smokies, have probably been stocked, now that water temperatures have fallen, and flows are higher.
The trout tailwaters are fishing well when you can work with TVA’s generation schedules. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can.
The US Drought Monitor was updated yesterday morning. You can see it by CLICKING HERE. The drought persists, but most states I checked showed much improvement from the week before.
Click on your region and your state for detailed views.
Look at the statistics. They indicate the changes in percentages compared to prior periods. Those numbers tell the complete story by region or state. For instance, in the Southeast, the percentage of the region in a moderate drought or worse, dropped from 65% to 53% compared to the week before. The percentage of the area that has no abnormally dry conditions or worse, rose from 15% to almost 27%.
Our county is currently described as being in a moderate drought.
You can see those numbers by region or state. We should see more improvement by next Thursday, due to the rain we will get this week in some areas. The data for this report is gathered on Tuesdays and reported on Thursdays.
Our fly tying department is well stocked right now and more orders are on the way. I’m trying to have a great selection of materials and tools by the first weekend in November. A lot of fly tyers will be in town for Fly Tyers Weekend.
The long term weather forecast for the event looks good at this point with highs around 60 degrees dipping to the upper 30’s at night. The chance for rain is very low.
We rented a 4 seat ATV to transport attendees that need the vehicle, with a driver, to get from the parking area to the conference center where the event is held. Parking will be provided at the Townsend Elementary School and the old City Hall. We had signs made to direct you to the parking and the event center. It is a short walk, but some people may prefer to be driven. So, we’ve got your back.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
