Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is November now...and it feels like the start of winter. A cold front rolled through with rain and a 30 degree temperature drop. There was even snow on Mount LeConte yesterday.
The rivers in the Smokies are high. This morning the Little River gauge is giving a reading of 3.10 feet or 817 c.f.s. This is much higher than the daily normal of 90 c.f.s. I haven't had the chance to look but I expect the water clarity to be fairly good.
Water temperatures crashed yesterday. This morning the Little River is a chilly 50.9 F. This wouldn't be too bad except that it was over 60F yesterday. The trout don't feed will after a big drop like that.
Fishing in the mountains is going to be tough at best today and tomorrow. Water levels are high enough to be hazardous. Stay out of the water the best you can. The other struggle you will have is leaves. Rain and wind in the fall means the streams will be choked with fallen leaves. Leaves are an annoyance in the water they grab tight to your fly. They can also be hazardous on the banks. Early on frosty mornings, leaves along the stream bank can be more treacherous and slippery than Abrams Creek. Be careful! In the water leaves like to accumulate in low spots. Never walk across submerged leaf piles unless you want to find yourself neck deep in an unexpected hole.
If you do venture out today or this weekend, nymphs with a lot of weight will be your best choice. Sink them deep to get to lethargic fish.
Fly Tyers Weekend begins day after tomorrow. The event is free. All you have to do is show up at Tremont Lodge in Townsend. Over 50 fly tyers will be demonstrating for you in shifts, Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd & 3rd. You can learn more about Fly Tyers Weekend by CLICKING HERE.
Dave and I will be getting everything set up over at Tremont Lodge today. Anthony Hipps in driving in this afternoon. This year the event is inside so there will be comfortable, well lit areas to watch and learn fly tying.
Parking is up at the Townsend Elementary School. We have rented a vehicle from Mountain Trax here in Townsend. There will be someone driving back and forth from the event to the parking lot to save folks the walk.
Since fishing is not going to be good make plans to come out to Fly Tyers Weekend!!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
