Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:13 am, the temperature outside is 36.7 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the mid-60’s. Rain arrives tonight with accumulations between a quarter and a half of an inch possible. The rain will turn to snow tomorrow morning along with a high temperature in the low 30’s. Tomorrow night will be cold, with temps plunging to the low to mid-teens.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.73 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs. The water temperature is 46.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or above normal for this date. Water temperatures are on the chilly side, especially in the higher elevations.
I think fishing will be fair to good today and slow tomorrow as water temperatures fall. Fish the lower elevations today where the water is warmer.
I would plan on using nymphs, weighted and fished deep. It is possible you will see some surface activity, probably blue wing olives or midges. Otherwise, I would stick with nymphs and fish them deep.
You may also see brown trout spawning or preparing to spawn. I would leave the spawners alone. And, I would be careful wading. You don’t want to wade through a redd, crushing the trout’s eggs.
You might want to fish a trout tailwater today. There are some opportunities, whether you are wading or boating. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
The park may be crowded today. Many people are off due to the holiday. We will be open of course. We only close for four holidays each year. Otherwise, we are open 7 days.
If you plan to visit the Smokies tomorrow, watch the Park’s Roads Twitter page by CLICKING HERE. Some roads may close due to snow and ice. Up to two inches of snow is anticipated in the mountains tomorrow morning.
Today we celebrate and honor Americans who serve or have served in our military. Thank you all for your service.
Some of my friends today, served with me in the Army during the early 1970’s. I will never forget Bill. I smile every time I think of him. He retired a few years ago at the rank of Major General. We still stay in touch. Bill was a great soldier. I missed his retirement celebration at Fort Knox because I could not get away from the shop at the last minute. I regret that.
Steve (Stevie) showed up at the shop a few years ago. He retired as a Major General too and he was another impressive soldier. We laughed about the good old days.
Sergeant Hall, (Mouse) and I spend a few days together each year. He lives in Kentucky and loves fly fishing. We are best buddies.
Drill Sergeant Brad Park passed away last year. Paula and I attended his service. Brad was another one of my best buddies. I smile when I think of him too, which is often.
There is something special about the strong bonds we form in the military, that last forever.
Today I honor you all.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
