Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:18 am, the temperature outside is 35.2 degrees.
It rained most of the night. We got .35 inches in Townsend. The rain turned to snow about an hour ago.
Rain and snow is predicted before tapering off this afternoon. Temperatures will fall into the upper 20’s by 5 pm. Snowfall accumulation of less than one inch is possible. According to the National Weather Service, “Some light snow accumulations can be expected this morning, especially across the higher elevations of the Northern Cumberland Plateau, Southwest Virginia, portions of northeast Tennessee and the East Tennessee Mountains.
Tonight will be cold, with temperatures dropping to the mid-teens. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low to mid-40’s. We will see a gradual warming through the week, after tonight.
Little River is flowing at 149 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.76 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 151 cfs. The river is rising. The water temperature is 49.6 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is rising. Flow is currently 305 cfs, 1.69 feet, compared to median flow of 201 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 295 cfs, 1.56 feet, compared to median flow of 234 cfs. The water temperature is 49.5 degrees. The water temperature is stable but the river is rising.
Tellico River is flowing at 112 cfs, 1.04 feet, compared to median flow of 100 cfs. The river is rising.
Cataloochee Creek is rising. Flow is currently 59.6 cfs, 2.37 feet, compared to median flow of 53 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees.
Fishing is going to be best in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Water temperatures will likely fall today and especially tonight. That is usually not a good condition for fishing. I would start with nymphs, fished deep. You may see a blue wing olive hatch today. Those insects love overcast wet days. Be prepared for that.
You may see some roads close in the Smokies today. US Highway 441, Newfound Gap Road and Clingman’s Dome Road were closed last night due to ice/snow weather advisory. The Park will advise when the roads have re-opened. You can view the Park’s Smokies Road Info page by CLICKING HERE, to see if they have opened later or if more roads have been closed.
There are trout tailwater fishing opportunities on some tailwaters today for wading and boating. Check the TVA website to plan your day.
Wherever you go, dress warm. It is going to get cold later today.
I have been adding new Fishpond gear to our online store. You are going to like what you see. Today, I will be adding the new waxed cotton luggage and gear pieces. The color has been changed to a dark olive, called Peat Moss. I saw the samples earlier this year. You can see an example of the new color, by viewing the Blue River Lumbar Pack. CLICK HERE.
Fishpond is introducing three new fly fishing vests. They have two new vests for men and women named “Upstream”. And, there is a new youth vest named the “Tenderfoot”.
You can see all the Fishpond vests on our online store by CLICKING HERE. I just noticed, I spelled Upstream wrong on the women’s vest. I will fix that when I get to the shop in an hour. Also, some vests shown have been discontinued. I will remove them later this week or next.
Updating our Fishpond website and our online store takes about two weeks, working full time, so it will be finished in a few days.
The new gear from Fishpond will be in the shop sometime this month.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
