Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

If you do not see today’s Fishing Report, please refresh your browser to empty your cache.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:18 am, the temperature outside is 29.5 degrees.

Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature around 60 degrees. The temperatures we will enjoy today and tonight are close to normal.

Little River is flowing at 117 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.63 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 147 cfs. The water temperature is 42.6 degrees.

Fishing is fair in the Smokies. We may see some improvement today. Water temperatures are chilly this morning, especially in the higher elevations.

I would wait a while before going today. Let the water warm a few degrees before you go. When the water warms just a couple of degrees, it does make a difference. I would also fish the lower elevation streams where the water is warmer.

Nymphs would be my choice. I would fish weighted nymphs or add split shot to get them down. My favorite patterns have been Pheasant Tail, Tellico, Prince or Hare’s Ear, and they have been for a long time. You may do as well or better with other reasonable nymph patterns.

You may see brown trout spawning in some rivers. Personally, I would leave them alone until the spawn is over, and just watch the show. Be careful not to wade in a redd, crushing the eggs. After the spawn, they are fair game in my way of thinking.

Tailwater trout fishing has been good. You might find generation schedules you can work with on some rivers today, especially if you are boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their schedules.

Daniel told me yesterday, the new Fishpond gear for the 2019/2020 season should arrive Thursday. I’m busy getting our online store and our own Fishpond website up to date with the new gear and color changes. Every year, I spend about two weeks doing that, working full time. I hope to be finished by the end of the week.

We always have a good Fishpond holiday season. We stock almost everything they make for our sport. Much of it is sold through our mail order business. The holidays are coming and Fishpond is historically one of our top manufacturers for holiday gifts. Our gift card sales will be high from now until Christmas.

Daniel also told me yesterday, he would post the Winter Fly Tying School Schedule quickly, so you can plan to take classes to learn this addition to your fly fishing sport. He and Dave are working on the Free Saturday Fly Tying Demonstration schedule too. So, we should have that on our website soon.

We held a beginner fly tying class yesterday and there is an intermediate class scheduled in December. The new class schedule will cover January and February.

I plan to finish receiving and displaying the last group of fly tying materials and tool orders, Umpqua and Natures Spirit. This has been a big job because that department did so well during Fly Tyers Weekend. We did about a months worth of business in three days. Tomorrow, I will re-order to replace what has sold during the past two weeks. Then, I will be on a weekly ordering schedule again.

If you are planning to take up the fly tying hobby, I would certainly suggest you buy a good fly tying vise. That will make your life much more enjoyable. Renzetti is my favorite. Their vises are made in the Florida Renzetti plant. Renzetti is a small manufacturer, family owned, with a staff of ten or more people working there. Renzetti makes fly tying vises that range in prices from $179.95 to several hundred dollars. The best seller by far, is the Traveler C2003 which is their lower priced model with a pedestal vise. The Traveler is billed as the most popular vise in the world.

Andy and Lily Renzetti have been friends of mine for many years. I can order vises and tools on Monday, and usually get them in the shop by Wednesday or Thursday.

You can learn more about the Traveler C2003 by CLICKING HERE to visit that page on our online store. Renzetti makes prettier vises, and some with more features, but the C2003 is perfect for getting the job done. Order online or call us at 865-448-9459 to order. We have several in stock, always. Ground shipping is free.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

A bamboo fly rod made by Walter Babb and 10 dozen flies tied by him will be auctioned off on Saturday December 14th at about 5:30 to 6:00 pm. This auction benefits the Needy Family Fund of Sweetwater Tennessee. This organization is made up of 20 area churches and raises money to buy food for families in need for Christmas. The auction will be held at the Sweetwater Primary School located at 500 Highway 322 East in Sweetwater.

You do not have to be present to bid on the rod or the flies. Call Phil Roy beforehand, at 423-337-1212 to register. You will be given several phone numbers to call in your bid during the live auction.

Below is what Walter told me about these auction items:

“The rod I made for the Needy Family Auction this year is a seven foot, 2 Piece, 4-weight Wayne Cattanach taper. Wayne is the author of Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods, one of the teaching books for me. This is a flamed single tip rod with a Hormigo Negro wooden spacer. In Spanish it is called an ant tree. Reel seat, spacer and ferrules are made by Baily Wood of Classic Sporting Enterprises. Also, the rod bag and rod tube are made by REC.

The box of flies are 10 dozen of my favorite nymphs. They include, three types of Tellico Nymphs, the Gray Squirrel nymph, George Nymph, Bead Head Peasant Tail, Atherton’s Medium Nymph, Bead Head Prince Nymph and Mr. Rapidan Emerger. This is my core group of nymphs that I use in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee National Forest and in Western North Carolina. I carry a few others for special occasions or hatches.”
