Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:20 am, the temperature outside is 46.6 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the upper 60’s. The low temperature tonight will be in the low to mid-50’s. Tomorrow will be warmer, with temps climbing to70 degrees. Rain is likely tomorrow and tomorrow night. Heavy rain is possible.
Little River is flowing at 264 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.19 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 312 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning.
Warming water temperatures have improved fly fishing for trout in the Smoky Mountains. The warming trend will continue today and tomorrow. Streams are flowing near normal. The weather we are experiencing now is rare in late December. Take advantage of this if you can.
You should be prepared for nymph or streamer fishing. There is a chance you may encounter aquatic insect activity and trout feeding on the surface this weekend. You may see blue wing olives, midges or other insects on the water. Or, you may not. If it happens where you are fishing, switch to dries and emergers and enjoy the fun. Otherwise, use nymphs or streamers.
Lowland river fishing where trout are stocked will be good today thanks to the warm water conditions.
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Corps of Engineers will be generating, sluicing and even spilling at many of the dams in the region over the next few days. They are anticipating wetter than normal days ahead in the Tennessee Valley.
According to a story I read this morning, this year has been the second wettest year in the valley. Last year was the wettest with average rainfall in the region of 67.02 inches. This year, average rainfall in the Tennessee Valley stands at 65.48 inches.
It is possible this year could set another precipitation record.
TVA and the Corps are preparing for that by pushing water through the dams to increase their storage capacity to avoid flooding like we had last year at this time.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
