Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. This morning there is heavy clouds and a slow drizzly rain. More rain is on the way this afternoon through Saturday.
Water levels in the Smokies are still good but may rise as the day continues. This morning the gauge is at 2.15 feet or 249 c.f.s. The daily normal is 310 c.f.s.
Water temperatures have dropped over the last several days. Fishing early in the day will be slow. Mid day to afternoon will be better after things start warming up.
Nymphs sunk deep are going to be the best choice with water levels and water temperatures. If you don't get hung on the bottom every now and then you might want to add more weight. Prince Nymphs, Pheasant Tails, Pat's Rubberlegs etc would be what I would start with. Fishing a dropper would be a good choice also. Have a big fly for weight and a smaller fly trailing.
A new year and a new decade has begun. Last year was the fourth wettest year on record for Knoxville. It really was an out of balance water year. We had the wettest February on record and then the rain stopped and we had the driest September on record. I haven't heard how fish populations in the Smokies fared. Floods and droughts can effect fish population. Lower population density can make for larger trout so natural die offs can actually be a benefit to fishing.
Our Saturday Free Fly Tying Demos start this weekend with Walter Babb and Brian Courtney. Walter and Brian will be tying from 10 am till 2 pm, Saturday January 4th. Just come to the Shop, pull up a chair and be ready for some good fly tying and lots of stories. We will have tyers each Saturday until the beginning of March. You can find the full schedule HERE.
Fly Tying Classes have started also. Our first Beginner Fly Tying class is January 11. The cost for the class is $85 and includes all the tools and materials for the day. Right now there is only one spot left in this class. The next is February 8th.
Our Intermediate Fly Tying Class will be February 29th and the Smoky Mountain Fly Tying Class is January 25th or March 14. The cost of these classes are $75. You need to have a basic class under your belt before you take these two classes. These classes jump right in with tying.
Space is limited to eight students in the Fly Tying Classes. To sign up for one of the regular classes give us a call to reserve your spot.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
