Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:23 am, the temperature outside is 62.8 degrees.
It will be very warm all weekend. The high expected today will be in the low 60’s, dropping to the mid-50’s tonight. We have a slight chance for showers today and a greater chance tonight. It will be breezy at times today.
Showers are likely Saturday, especially late, with a high temperature in the low 70’s. We can expect showers and possibly a thunderstorm Saturday night with a low temperature in the upper 40’s. Strong winds are possible. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the mid-60’s.
Little River is flowing at 416 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.54 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 284 cfs. The water temperature is 44.4 degrees and rising.
The streams are receding and warming in the Smoky Mountains. Fishing will improve as the waters warm. Trout will be actively feeding. Nymphs and streamers will work and there is a chance you may find aquatic insects on the water with trout feeding on them. A blue wing olive hatch is possible all weekend. Fishing will probably be good tomorrow and Sunday.
Rain is expected this weekend at times, but I don’t see any predictions of significant precipitation in the forecast. A thunderstorm is possible late Saturday. High winds may be our problem. I can hear the wind blowing right now. We had a wind gust of 14 miles per hour a few minutes ago.
Lowland river fishing for trout, where they are stocked, will probably be good. I have not heard from anyone lately about fishing on Little River in Townsend. If you go, try an olive Wooly Bugger.
Tailwater fishing today appears to be out of the question. TVA is generating around the clock and sluicing at most tributary dams in the area today. They are generating and spilling at dams on the Tennessee River.
We will be holding another Free Fly Tying Demonstration at the shop tomorrow, from 10 am until 2 pm. Steve Brown and his brother Tom Brown will be tying. All you have to do is show up. These guys are excellent fly tyers and fly fishermen. Come by the shop, pour a cup of coffee and enjoy the day. You will learn much about tying and fly fishing from these guys.
We are also holding an all-day beginner fly tying class tomorrow. I think the class is full but you might check if you are interested by calling the shop at 865-448-9459 to see if there is an opening.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
