Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:19 am, the temperature outside is 37.6 degrees.
Rain amounts yesterday varied by location. The Knoxville Airport reported .98 inches. A personal weather station near our home reported .30 inches fell during the past 24 hours. It appears the Park got quite a bit of rain yesterday, as some stream levels rose quickly during the day.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 40’s dropping to about 30 degrees tonight. Sunday will be sunny and warmer with a high around 50 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 801 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.14 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 321 cfs. The water temperature is 47.1 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,250 cfs, 3.03 feet, compared to median flow of 663 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,060 cfs, 2.67 feet, compared to median flow of 597 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 729 cfs, 2.56 feet, which compares to median flow for this date of 331 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 218 cfs, 2.97 feet, compared to median flow of 126 cfs.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today you will find much higher than normal flows. Be careful wading. I would stand in safe water and high stick a pair of heavily weighted nymphs. The streams are fairly warm today so you might catch a few trout, especially in the lower elevations. The high water will limit where you can fish.
TVA and the Corps appear to be cutting back the flows at some dams in East Tennessee. Check the links below to see what if any opportunities are available for you today.
I know fly fishing opportunities have been limited lately and we are all anxious to go fishing. It seems like the freestone streams are either too high or too cold. The tailwaters have been pretty much blown out.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced they will be closing both roads to the Cataloochee Valley from February 10th through May 20th. The main road into Cataloochee will be closed for repairs to stabilize a hillside. They also plan to close Highway 284, the alternate route to Cataloochee from Big Creek at the same time to all vehicles, bicycles and horses. The campground and rest rooms will be closed. I hated reading that news this morning.
Will Davis and Jimmy Jones will be conducting free fly tying demonstrations at the shop today between 10 am and 2 pm. All you have to do is show up. These guys both have great fly fishing and fly tying skills. You will learn many new tying and fishing techniques today. They will be tying and talking to you simultaneously at different locations in the shop. We have chairs set up for your comfort.
Will likes to tie and fish using Euro Nymphing techniques and he is good at it. Jimmy loves fly fishing in the Smokies, and his patterns have been tested on the local streams for many years.
I hope you are fishing somewhere today or attending our Free Fly Tying demos at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
