Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:42 am, the temperature outside is 35.2 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the high 40’s. Rain will move into the region tonight and last through tomorrow. The high temperature tomorrow is predicted to be in the upper 40’s again with a low in the low to mid 30’s tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 617 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.89 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 359 cfs. The water temperature is 44.2 degrees and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 873 cfs, 2.60 feet, compared to median flow for this date of 619 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 871 cfs, 2.46 feet, which compares to median flow of 576 cfs. The water temperature is 41.7 degrees and falling.
Tellico River is flowing at 587 cfs, 2.26 feet, compared to median flow of 337 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 202 cfs, 2.92 feet, compared to median flow of 120 cfs. The water temperature is 39.2 degrees and falling this morning.
As you can see, the streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauges are flowing above normal. Water temperatures are chilly, especially in the higher elevations.
The stream you choose to fish may be swift so be careful wading. Nymphs will probably work best. I would fish a pair, with plenty of weight to get them down. Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Water temperatures may rise slightly during the day then fall at night over the next few days.
TVA and the Corps plan to generate at most dams in East Tennessee today. You might check some of the dams in upper East Tennessee where generation schedules could allow you on the water for a while.
We were busy at the shop yesterday. We had a fly tying class with 7 students in the classroom all day. Jimmy Jones and Will Davis conducted fly tying demonstrations.
I spent yesterday upstairs, working on organizing the fly tying department in our inventory system. I’ll be doing the same today. I will be taking inventory in that department tomorrow and Tuesday. I made a lot of changes in the desired inventory levels of our best selling items and cut back or eliminated those that have not sold well during the past year. Then, I will be buying new materials and tools to sell. This takes a lot of time, because there are so many items to review.
I talked to a friend of mine yesterday, who owns a business in Townsend. She told me their business is down from last year so far in January. That was expected, due to the closing of the Bote Mountain Tunnel for repairs. Evidently, less people are traveling to Townsend because Cades Cove is closed. It will re-open in late February.
I mentioned in yesterday’s report that the Cataloochee Valley will be inaccessible for about 3 months beginning February 10th. The main road in will be closed to stabilize a hillside. The other gravel winding road from Big Creek will be closed too. The campground and other facilities will be shut down during the period.
Anglers and other visitors will be anxiously awaiting the re-opening of the Cataloochee Valley this Spring. That is one beautiful place with great streams to fish. Businesses in the area will also be anxious for that area to re-open again.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
