Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:34 am, the temperature outside is 35.6 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today, with a high temperature near 60 degrees and a low tonight in the low 40’s. It will be breezy today. Tomorrow will be sunny again, with a high of 70 degrees falling to 50 degrees overnight. Rain moves into the area Monday night, continuing through Thursday. Temperatures will be much warmer than normal through the week.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.27 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is 45.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smoky Mountains are flowing near or slightly below normal today. Water temperatures are fairly warm in the low elevations. The water temps will rise today and tomorrow.
Trout feeding activity will increase as the water warms further today and through the week. Nymph rigs will most likely be the best choice. I would use Pheasant Tail, Tellico, Hare’s Ear or Prince nymph patterns. Other patterns will work.
You may encounter aquatic insects on the water. You might see blue wing olives, small black stoneflies, midges or other bugs on the water. Trout may or may not be feeding on the adults. As the week progresses, you may find more insects on the water. There is no telling what may happen this week, as the water warms. Fishing will probably be good over the next few days. I think fishing will be fair today but it could be better.
If you visit the TVA website, you will find breaks in generation flows at some dams, especially in upper East Tennessee. Flows at many dams have been cut back lately. Look at Wilbur and South Holston Dam schedules. Check Cherokee Dam. There may be a few tailwater fishing opportunities today.
I can’t wait to see what fishing conditions look like later this week. The water will be warming. Trout feeding activity will improve. I don’t know now, how much rain we will get later this week. Hopefully it won’t be too much.
We had a wet January, almost three inches of rain above normal and over two inches more than we had last year at this time. Last year, the deluge came in February. We don’t want to see that again.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
