Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing high and wading is not safe. The streams and rivers are receding slowly.
Most roads in the Park are open today. Both roads to the Cataloochee Valley were scheduled to be closed February 10th through May 20th for repairs.
TVA, Corps of Engineers and Brookfield are generating heavily and in some cases spilling on the larger rivers. They are generating at most tributary dams and in some cases sluicing and spilling. There are some tailwaters in the area that may be fishable today, though there is a chance those rivers are stained. Check the TVA links below to see what your options are.
For 15 years, state and federal agencies have been trying to halt the advance of invasive Asian carp. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) was recently awarded a $25 million grant to be used for this purpose. Many other states are improving their methods to control the populations.
I found an interesting story on the ABC news website this morning, on the subject. Our own TWRA chief of fisheries, Frank Fiss is quoted in the article. You can read it by CLICKING HERE.
Jon Oody and Matt Dixon will by conducting free fly tying demonstrations at the shop Saturday. This is an opportunity for you to learn new fly tying and fishing techniques. They will be tying and talking between 10 am and 2 pm. All you have to do is show up. It’s free.
I am working on the optics department. I began doing the buying of most of our sunglasses and optics last year at this time. David Carson keeps the Cocoons in stock. Right now, I am looking at each item we sell to determine which models were more popular last year. Then, I will make adjustments and bring in new models this Spring.
We buy from Suncloud, Fisherman Eyewear, Cocoons and Croakies for that department. I am adding Smith sunglasses this Spring. Polarized sunglass with amber or yellow lenses sell very well at our shop. These glasses are great in low light conditions like we have in the mountains.
Smith models that are very popular here have their Low Light Igniter lenses. These glass polarized lenses increase the contrast giving you much better visibility where and when there is low light. I’m going to get a pair of those. Suncloud and Smith are the same company.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
