Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:13 am, the temperature outside is 64.2 degrees.
It will be warm again today, with a high temperature in the mid-60’s dropping to the low 50’s tonight. We have an 80% chance for showers today but no significant precipitation is expected. It will be breezy, with possible gusts as high as 20 miles per hour.
Tomorrow will be warm with a low chance for showers. It will be warm with a chance for showers every day through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 283 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.21 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 382 cfs. The water temperature is 49.3 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing at or below median flow. The water temperatures are rising. We have been waiting for warmer water and normal flows. We have that now.
Fishing is good and that will continue through the weekend. Trout will be taking nymphs and dry flies. Many aquatic insect species will be found at times on the streams. Be ready for just about any normal Spring hatch.
Overcast skies are predicted all week, which benefits the angler. If you picked this week to be fishing in the mountains, you picked a good one.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams all day today. They are also sluicing at some of them. I didn’t see any good tailwater fishing opportunities when I checked this morning.
This will not be a good lake fishing day, due to the anticipated wind.
We are busy at the shop. We would be busier if the tailwaters were fishable. Hopefully that won’t be too far off.
We are seeing a lot of Spring break activity, which is normal. That will increase over the next few days.
I have a ton of fly tying orders arriving today through Friday. And, there are a lot of sunglasses coming too. That will keep me busy for two or three days. Then I’ll get back on the online store, adding new gear.
Everyone around here is so glad this Winter is over. It is good to see more visitors in town. Business owners are anticipating a good Spring. Many of the restaurants that close during the Winter, are opening this week. This Winter was a tough one for those in the tourism business. Cades Cove was closed for two months and then there was the flood.
The economy in Townsend is tourism driven. Almost off of us depend on visitors, for our businesses to survive and to keep people employed. Things are looking up and we are all happy about that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
