Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:21 am, the temperature outside is 74.3 degrees.
It will be warm today, with a high temperature in the mid-70’s. Rain is predicted today and tonight. The rain may be heavy at times.
Little River is flowing at 452 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.58 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 361 cfs. The water temperature is 57.7 degrees this morning.
Right now, fishing is fair overall. Water temperatures are excellent for trout feeding activity. The streams are flowing fairly high. Little River’s flow is on the high side of good. That may change later, due to the expected rain.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are generating and in some cases sluicing at area dams. They have cut back, giving us hope that the tailwaters can be safely waded soon.
LRO is still open, and we are complying with Federal guidelines. There are only three or four of us working in the shop. Customers are not entering our building. We are delivering merchandise outside. I have not seen a group of people anywhere near 10 people standing outside the building. Our customers waiting for their orders outside are usually one or two.
We have a credit card machine set up on our front porch for customer use. We are sanitizing it frequently.
We are not selling fishing licenses, but instead, encouraging customers to buy them online.
We are shipping orders to customers daily.
We do not have fly tying materials on our online store. That may change soon. You can call us and we will fill and ship fly tying materials to you or you can pick them up curb-side. Our telephones are wireless, so we can talk to you as we pick your order.
I read this morning, due to Spring Break, there are large crowds in some tourist communities near the Park. I do not see that happening in Townsend. Traffic appears to be very light.
Thank you for all of the encouraging e-mail we have received from you. It makes us feel much better knowing our loyal friends like you are supporting us during these trying times.
I have owned a small business, continuously since 1973. I opened a quick printing shop in Nashville when I was 23 years old and it grew to be several locations. Believe me, I have been through many tough times in business, mostly recessions. Remember the oil crisis? I do.
I don’t remember anything like this. We will adapt. We are adapting. We are thinking “out of the box”. No ideas are off the table without careful consideration. Good ideas are turning into better ideas quickly.
Daniel came up with the curb service idea. It is working and along with our mail order service, we are doing enough business to keep us going. Actually, we are doing better than I imagined.
I have faith that Americans will get through this and we will return to normal again soon.
I can’t wait to welcome each and every one of you back into our store. When those doors open to you, that first day, everyone at LRO will be very happy. Right now, we all seem to have a very positive attitude. I do.
Have a great day and thank you for being here for us.
