Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:28 am, the temperature outside is 55.9 degrees.
Warmer air moved into the region along with rain. The rain began light but it is heavier now. So far, we have had .28 inches. The rain will continue for about two more hours or longer. It will clear later today. Expect a high temperature in the low 60’s today. Rain will return tonight and tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 437 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.52 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 271 cfs. The water temperature is 53.6 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing above normal. Oconaluftee River and the Little Pigeon River have begun to rise slightly. Others will probably follow as more rain is expected this morning.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, nymph rigs will probably work best. You may find some streams stained and rising. Check the stream flows from the links below before you go. It is too early to tell what to expect today. I do not see any significant rain on the weather radar. Fishing conditions may be fine. Or, it may not.
The lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. They could be stained too. The rivers may clear quickly today, especially in the upper reaches.
Tennessee Valley Authority has evidently changed the URL’s for their generation schedules. The old links below are not working. You can go to the TVA website home page and find the generation schedule in a new format. This change must have occurred yesterday. The links below worked fine yesterday morning. I will change the links today.
CLICK HERE to see the page with the new links. Choose your lake and view the generation schedules from there. The pages are new and look slightly different from the old pages.
I checked several and did not see any fishing opportunities on the tailwaters today but I did not look at all of them.
Lake fishing may be good today. Some lakes could be stained. I keep hearing about the high number of fishermen on the lakes. I have also heard from several people to expect crowds on streams in the Cherokee National Forest. When the National Park re-opens, there will be less anglers in the national forest.
We were busy at the shop yesterday, shipping mail orders and serving curbside pickup customers. I spent the day adding new fly tying materials to the online store. There were four of us working yesterday. Business was normal for a Friday in April. I hope that continues. We all do.
We do miss seeing you inside the store.
UPDATE 9:03 AM - I CHANGED THE OLD LINKS TO THE NEW ONES ON THE TVA LAKE INFORMATION AND TAILWATER GENERATIONS SCHEDULES BELOW. THEY ARE ALL WORKING FINE NOW.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
