Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:08 am, the temperature outside is 67.6 degrees.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely today. It will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the low to mid-80’s. Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny with a highs in the upper 80’s. We have a slight chance for rain Saturday and no chance Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 173 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 159 cfs. The water temperature is 64.9 degrees this morning.
Some scattered thunderstorms moved through the area yesterday. Most streams rose slightly due to the low amounts of rain. The Little Pigeon River watershed got the most rain in the Park. The river is flowing at 645 cfs or 2.31 feet at the Sevierville gauge. The water is receding quickly.
Fishing is very good to excellent in the Smokies. Water levels in most streams are flowing slightly higher than normal. Dry flies and nymphs are working well. Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations are great dry flies to use now. Most reasonable nymphs will work. Try Green or Pink Weenies and Squirmy Worms.
The lowland rivers are flowing well and fishing for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species is good. Streamers, nymphs, poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies are good choices. Thunderstorms could raise and stain the water today, temporarily.
TVA is generating at many dams in our area today. There are some breaks in the schedules at a few dams this morning, including Norris, Douglas and South Holston. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their schedules.
Lake fishing is good. Warmwater species are active in shallow water. It should be overcast today which is beneficial. I would plan on staying near the ramp to fish, for a short run to my truck should a thunderstorm move through.
Streamers, poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies are all good choices for fly fishing on the lakes.
From June 17th through September 30th, Cades Cove Loop Road will be closed to vehicle traffic all day on Wednesdays. The road will be open to bicyclists and pedestrians. During this period, the road will be open to vehicles all day on Saturdays.
For years, the road was closed to vehicles during the Summer on Wednesdays and Saturdays until 10 am. This new schedule is supposed to improve traffic and parking issues.
Through the period on Wednesdays, if you want to fish on Abrams Creek, you will need to walk in or ride a bicycle. On Saturdays, you can drive to the creek when the road opens first thing in the morning.
I checked this morning again. Elkmont Road is still closed. All campgrounds in the Park are closed.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
