Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:18 am, the temperature outside is 71.2 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high near 90 degrees. There is a low chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be cooler, in the mid-80’s with thunderstorms likely during the day and through the night. Thursday and Friday will be cooler with only a low chance for showers Thursday morning.
Little River is flowing at 134 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.70 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 149 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Park are flowing at or above normal today. Water temperatures are warm in the very lowest elevations and that will continue today. I would fish a little higher than the lowest elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s during the heat of the day.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations are good dry fly choices. Your nymph selection should include Pheasant Tail, Green Weenie, Pink Weenie and Squirmy Worm patterns.
Lowland rivers are fishing well for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species. Nymphs, streamers and top water flies are working. Fishing will be best early and late when the sun is off the water in open areas. Fish shaded areas during the day for best results.
Tailwater anglers will find many options today. There are breaks in the generation schedules at most dams. The Corps has stopped spilling at Center Hill Dam, which is good news. They have cut back on generation at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky so early floats are possible. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the generation schedule at your favorite tailwater.
Fishing on the lakes is good. Go early or late today when the sun is off the water. Streamers and top water flies are working. It is going to be hot out there today. I would be at the ramp at daybreak and fish until late morning.
I don’t think we could ask for much better fishing conditions in the Tennessee Valley.
Outdoor activity has surged this year and fishing is one of them. I’m not just talking about fly fishing. All fishing has gained popularity this Spring. Others include bicycling, paddling, hiking, photography and gardening. Boating has gone crazy according to what I have heard and read.
Fly tying is still very popular. I am placing the weekly fly tying material orders and they are much larger than what I usually see in June. I think a lot of people took up the hobby this Winter.
Business at the shop is very good. We are all very thankful to you for keeping us going well.
Next Monday, we will be allowed back to Elkmont. That opens up access to some great trout streams. The campground will open too.
The East Prong of Little River, along the Little River Trail is beautiful with easy access from the trail in most cases for several miles. Fish Camp Prong is one of my favorite streams in the Park. You will need to hike about four miles to reach where it enters the East Prong of Little River. It’s worth the effort. You will be walking past some prime fishing water to get there, which is not easy to do. You will be enticed to stop and fish.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
