Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:12 am, the temperature outside is 69.8 degrees.
It will be warm today with a high temperature in the mid-80’s. Rain and possibly thunderstorms will move into the area later today and through the night. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and cooler, in the low 80’s. Friday and through the weekend will be sunny with temperatures topping out in the low 80’s. There is a low chance for rain Sunday afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 124 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.66 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 158 cfs. The water temperature is 68.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are still flowing at normal or slightly above normal. Little River is the only one with a reporting USGS gauge site, flowing below normal. Some were affected by rain yesterday, though they are all fishable.
Water temperatures are reaching or exceeding 70 degrees in the lowest elevations. It would be best to fish slightly higher where the water is cooler. The streams will cooler this weekend, due to nighttime temperatures falling into the 50’s with highs in the low 80’s.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. As water levels have fallen to normal or below, stealth is very important to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Stay low to avoid being seen by the trout. Try to keep your fly line off the water as much as possible to avoid spooking the trout.
Lowland river fishing is good for smallmouth bass. They are taking streamers and top water flies. Fishing will be best early or late when the sun is off the water. If you are fishing a river with tree canopy, during the day, cast to the shaded areas.
There are breaks in the generation at several tailwaters today, including Douglas, Norris, Wolf Creek and South Holston dams. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the generation schedules at your favorite tailwater.
The lakes are packed with people and boats. The launch ramps are crowded. Lake fishing is good. Go early or late to avoid the crowds as much as possible and when the sun is off the water. Streamers and top water flies will work.
We have many fly fishing options to choose from. Cooler temperatures beginning tomorrow will be welcome to us all.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
