Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:12 am, the temperature outside is 56.8 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature near the mid-70’s. We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms. Cooler temperatures will persist through Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.59 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 153 cfs. The water temperature is 63.7 degrees this morning.
Rainfall affected water levels in some streams yesterday. Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek rose quickly but they are receding. Tellico River is flowing above normal. Little Pigeon River and Little River are both flowing below normal.
We are in a period when scattered thunderstorms temporarily raise stream levels, which happened yesterday. Some watersheds are affected while others are not. If a stream you are fishing rises and becomes stained, move to another stream and the conditions could be fine.
Fishing is good overall in the Smokies. Water temperatures have cooled. Stealth is very important to your success. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more. Yellow Sally Stonefly dries and Green Weenies are working well.
Elkmont Road and campground will open today. Fishing the upper East Prong of Little River and its tributaries is going to be possible without a long hike.
Some lowland rivers are flowing low while others are not. Fishing will be best on overcast days. Or, go early or late when the sun is off the water. Fish shaded areas when possible. Streamers, nymphs and top water flies will produce for you.
There are fishing opportunities on several tailwaters today. Fishing on the rivers has been very good for trout and smallmouth bass. Check the TVA website to see if you can work with the generation schedules on your favorite tailwater.
Lake fishing is good in shallow water using streamers and top water flies. Go early or late when the sun is off the water. We will likely have overcast conditions at times today and tomorrow. We all love fishing the lakes on cloudy days. Thunderstorms are possible so watch out for those. You might need to run to the ramp.
You have many choices right now, especially since the tailwater flows are more angler friendly.
Get out and go!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
