Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:13 am, the temperature outside is 55.8 degrees.
It will be cool today with a high temperature in the mid-70’s dropping to the low 50’s tonight. There is a chance for thunderstorms today, tomorrow and Thursday. Hight temperatures will be in the 70’s through the period.
Little River is flowing at 127 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 152 cfs. The water temperature is 61.5 degrees this morning.
Water levels rose in some Park streams yesterday. Several are flowing above normal today but none that have USGS gauge sites are too high to wade or fish. Water temperatures are cool and fishing is good.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. I would use a Yellow Neversink Caddis for my dry and a Green Weenie for sub-surface fishing. Other fly patterns will work for you. Stealth and presentation are key to your success.
Lowland river fishing is fair to good for smallmouth bass. Streamers, nymphs and top water flies will produce for you.
The tailwaters are fishing well for trout and smallmouth bass. You can choose from many options for wading and boating. The list of options is long today. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
Lake fishing is good. We should have overcast conditions this week at times which is a benefit for us. Streamers and top water flies are working. When the sun is off the water, stick with poppers or foam floating flies and cast to the banks. You may also see game fish rising to shad on the surface when the sun is off the water. Go early, very early.
If the large bluegill and shellcrackers are not taking poppers, switch to a nymph, specifically a Rubber Legged Dragon. Cast and let the Dragon sink, then slowly retrieve.
Elkmont Road and the campground opened yesterday. That gives us access to much more prime trout water in the Park.
The Cades Cove Loop Road will be closed to vehicles all day tomorrow and every Wednesday through September. You can walk, run or ride a bicycle on the road all day without dealing with cars and trucks. I can’t wait to hear how this turns out. Fishing pressure on Abrams Creek should be light on Wednesdays. Some anglers may hike or ride their bike to the creek to fish and enjoy the solitude.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
