Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:04 am, the temperature outside is 65.1 degrees.
Strong thunderstorms moved through East Tennessee late yesterday. A large storm was moving toward Townsend, but fizzled just before reaching us. The storm remained strong to west. We got .20 inches near our home at a personal weather station.
It will be mostly sunny, warm and humid today with a high temperature in the low to mid-80’s. Expect thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. Tomorrow will be cooler with showers and thunderstorms likely. Thunderstorms are predicted Wednesday with a high temperature in the upper 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 96.0 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.54 feet at the Townsend gauge. Median flow for this date is 134 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees this morning.
Rain fell yesterday in many other areas of the Park. Little Pigeon River, Tellico River, Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are all flowing higher than median flow.
Fishing is good. Little River could use some rain. Dry flies and nymphs are working. Stay hidden from the trout and fish the broken water in plunge pools, pockets and deep runs.
Lowland river fishing is fair to good for smallmouth bass. I would choose one of the rivers that are flowing higher. Little Pigeon River is a good choice. There is a possibility some lowland rivers are temporarily stained this morning. Streamers, nymphs, hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies will work. Fish the shaded areas today. Go early or late.
There are many fly fishing opportunities on the tailwaters today, depending on where and when you go. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day. Tailwater fishing has been good for trout and smallmouth bass.
Lake fishing is good. I would go early. It will likely be sunny for part of the day. Fish when and where the sun is off the water. Be aware that we may have strong thunderstorms move through later. You may need to run to the ramp. Streamers, swimming nymphs, hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies are all good choices. Determine what works best and cast to the shaded banks.
We are still very busy at the shop. Most if not all fly shops in our area are busy this year. All fishing stores and bait shops are booming. More people are fishing and enjoying all outdoor activities. We feel safe outdoors. We want to get out of the house.
All companies who offer mail order service are cranking out shipments and trying to keep up. Shippers are covered up. Ask your UPS or FedX driver how busy they have been. The answer is the same from all of them. “It’s been crazy this year”, or something close. We have had one UPS driver deliver in the Townsend area for 25 years. We see him or others before him almost every day. This year, there are two UPS drivers delivering in the Townsend area.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
