Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:00 am, the temperature outside is 66.7 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 80’s and a low chance for thunderstorms. Tomorrow and Friday will be mostly sunny with a low chance for rain with highs in the low to mid-80’s.
Little River is flowing at 105 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.58 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 138 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River, Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are all flowing higher than normal today. Rain and scattered thunderstorms that have kept these rivers flowing well, have often missed the Little River drainage.
Fishing has been very good in the Smokies. I talked to Buddy yesterday. He told me he had one of the best days ever on his favorite stream in the Smokies this week. Most anglers agree, the size of the trout are larger this year. When that happens, we have usually lost an age group of one or more species of trout due to flooding or drought. We have had two floods this year. We don’t notice there are less trout. We do notice they are larger.
This year may set another rainfall record in the Tennessee Valley. It started the year that way for sure.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Stealth and presentation are more important to your success than fly selection. Don’t spook the trout and you will definitely catch more. I would use Yellow Sally Stonefly imitations for my dry and a Green Weenie below the surface.
Some lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal but at a good level. Fishing is good for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species. Streamers, nymphs, hair bugs, poppers and foam floating flies are working for smallmouth bass.
Again, we have many tailwater wade and boat fishing opportunities today on the local tailwaters. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their generation schedules on your favorite tailwater.
Lake fishing is good. Today may be the perfect day to go. It will be overcast, which extends your shallow water and top water fishing time. Streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will produce for you today. There is a chance for thunderstorms so watch for those.
I would go fishing today. The conditions are excellent. We all love overcast days.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
