Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:02 am, the temperature outside is 69.4 degrees.
It will be cloudy early today with a low chance for showers this morning and thunderstorms this afternoon. The high temperature will be near 80 degrees. Tomorrow will be warmer, in the mid-80’s with a low chance for rain. Rain chances will increase this weekend, especially on Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 87.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.50 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 128 cfs. The water temperature is 68.0 degrees this morning.
Though Little River is flowing below normal, other streams in the Smokies are not. Little Pigeon River, Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing at or above normal for this date.
Water temperatures are warm in the lowest elevations. Fish somewhat higher where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s when and where you are fishing.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs and fishing has been very good in the Smokies.
Some lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal with Little River being an exception. Smallmouth bass fishing is fair to good. Use nymphs, streamers or top water flies and fish the shaded areas. I would go early today while it is overcast.
You can work with the generation schedules and fish on many tailwaters today. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see where and when you can fish today.
This will probably be another good lake fishing day, due to the cloud cover predicted this morning. I would be pulling out right now with our boat in tow, arriving at a ramp at daybreak. Until the sun pops out, fishing in shallow water with poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies will be good.
Paula told me this morning she heard three rapid gun shots a few hours ago at 3:30 am. I heard them too. Someone was either running a bear off, or worse. Maybe we will hear more about that later.
I drove to the shop at 7:30 am yesterday, as usual. When I pulled to the intersection of Highway 321, I saw something I have never seen anything close to, in 25 years of making that commute from home to Little River Outfitters. There were people everywhere, walking, biking and running. I have never seen so many people on the bike trail, sidewalk and on the road in my life. And, it was early in the morning.
Guide Rob Fightmaster was at the shop preparing for a guided trip. He told me Laurel Creek Road was closed due to a rock slide.
It was Wednesday, the one day each week when Cades Cove is closed to vehicles. Hundreds of people must have been lined up to walk, bike or jog and they could not go further. Many must have opted for Townsend instead of their intended vehicle free day at the Cove. The rock slide was small and cleared by 10 am.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
