Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:58 am, the temperature outside is 73 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today, with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. We have a good chance for scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be sunny and very warm but less humid. There is only a slight chance for rain. Sunday will be warm with a better chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 131 cfs. The water temperature is 70 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing normal at the Sevierville gauge. Oconaluftee River was affected by a thunderstorm late last night. The river is receding but not blown out at all. Tellico River is flowing above median flow but it is receding. Cataloochee Creek is flowing above normal.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations and that will continue through the weekend. Do the trout a favor and fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the mid-60’s or cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Terrestrial patterns are a good choice. Try foam beetles and Green Weenies.
The lowland rivers are low, though some are flowing higher than normal. Fly fishing for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species is fair to good. Try poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies. If that is not working, switch to streamers or nymphs. Partly cloudy conditions will be helpful today if it really happens.
Scheduled releases at most dams are angler friendly today, at least until the afternoon. You should be able to fish most tailwaters in the area. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
Partly cloudy conditions will be helpful if you plan to fish on one of the impoundments today. I would still go early when you know for sure the sun will be off the water. I would definitely start with poppers, hair bugs or foam floating flies. Switch to streamers or swimming nymphs if the top water flies are not working where you are fishing. Or, move to other areas.
You may find smallmouth bass on rocky points or banks, cruising. Or, they may be in the fallen timber. Try fallen timber structure for largemouth bass. The larger bluegill and shellcrackers may be deep. Slowly retrieve a dragonfly nymph and fish it several feet below the surface. I usually use a standard 9’ leader when fishing dragonfly nymph imitations. The nymphs should be weighted. Let them sink then retrieve slowly.
We are fairly busy at the shop, but nothing like it was in May and June. Those two months were crazy busy! July seems to be back to normal from a business perspective.
I have a doctor appointment today at my office. We are doing it remotely on FaceTime. Paula showed me how to use FaceTime and turn on the speaker phone option. I don’t use my iPhone much, other than like a normal telephone.
That is going to be interesting. I ran to town yesterday and got my lab stuff done. I’ll get my weight, take my blood pressure and temperature. I guess my doctor and I will just sit there looking at each other on our phones, and talk about numbers and general health. We also talk about fun things too. He’s a good guy and a great doctor.
I have a dentist appointment Monday. We can’t do that on FaceTime. I wish we could.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
