Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:01 am, the temperature outside is 74.1 degrees.
It is going to rain this afternoon through tomorrow. The chances are 80% today and 90% tomorrow. We could get over an inch of rain by tomorrow morning and more tomorrow. The words “torrential rains” appear in the National Weather Service prediction. It will be somewhat cooler through tomorrow, with highs in the mid-80’s.
Little River is flowing at 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 131 cfs. The water temperature is 71.2 degrees this morning.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 663 cfs, 2.07 feet, compared to median flow of 279 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek and Tellico River are flowing higher than normal and receding. Little Pigeon River at Sevierville is flowing slightly higher than normal.
Streams in the Smokies will likely rise significantly if we get the rain that is called for over the next two days. If these storms are not widespread, there may be fishable streams during this period. Only time will tell.
Fishing may be good today, or at least this morning and early afternoon. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Watch for quickly rising water and get out of the river if that happens.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Cloudy skies are predicted this afternoon which does improve fishing. However, at any time you may see rising and stained water after the rain begins. I would go this morning and hope for the best later. Try poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies. If that does not work, switch to streamers or nymphs.
You will find angler friendly flows on some tailwaters today. Flows from Cherokee, Douglas and South Holston Dams look promising at times. Check the flow before you go.
If you plan to fish on a lake, go early. I would be at the ramp right now, launching our boat. I would not stray too far due to the pending thunderstorms. You may need to run to the ramp and pull out at any time. Cast poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies to the banks.
I would keep an eye on the weather radar. There is always the chance this could turn out to be an epic fishing day. Or, maybe not. Whatever you decide to do, be careful.
One of the two bears that have been hanging around our house emerged from the forest late yesterday and walked toward our back door. It got within 20 feet and I opened the door. The bear heard the noise, looked up and saw me, then turned and ran away quickly. Now that is the kind of behavior I like to see.
The other bear is bold. It’s behavior is different. We have not seen that one in a few days. Hopefully it moved on.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
