Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature outside is 72.9 degrees.
It will be cooler today with a high in the low to mid-80’s. We will see some sunshine but there is a chance for showers and thunderstorms. They say the low temperature tonight will be in the upper 60’s with a high tomorrow in the low 80’s. Thunderstorms are likely tomorrow.
If the weather forecasters are correct, this is going to be a nice cool week with lows dipping into the low 60’s Tuesday and Wednesday. As we all know, that is subject to change.
Little River is flowing at 154 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 118 cfs. The water temperature is 70.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 458 cfs, 2.06 feet, compared to median flow of 236 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 635 cfs, 2.03 feet, which compares to median flow of 267 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 95.5 cfs, 2.57 feet, compared to median flow of 54 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 187 cfs, 1.30 feet, compared to median flow of 116 cfs for this date.
Streams in the Smoky Mountains are flowing higher than normal. These are excellent flows, especially in August. Fishing conditions are very good though the water is warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Use nymphs or dry flies and you should do well.
Lowland rivers are flowing well too, above normal for the Summer. I would go early or late to avoid the sun unless the river you are fishing is shaded. Poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs should work. If not, switch to nymphs or streamers.
You have many tailwater fishing choices today. Click on the links below to see the generation schedules on your favorite tailwater.
I would go early or late to avoid the sun if you plan to fly fish on a lake. Hit the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, hair bugs, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, move to shaded banks. It could be cloudy at times which will be a benefit for you. From what I am hearing, the lakes are less crowded with recreation boaters.
There is a chance for thunderstorms today so you might have to deal with that, though the chance is low. Overall, this should be a very good fishing day for you.
If you tie flies on Tiemco hooks, you probably noticed some of the popular models have been unavailable for months. Our suppliers have been out of them, mostly 2487 and 2488 models, which are very popular among tailwater trout anglers. I have had some models or sizes of some turned off on our online store. Almost all Tiemco hooks are back in stock at the shop and as of yesterday, the backordered hooks are now available on our online store too. CLICK HERE to see our fly tying hook offering. Click through the pages until you reach the Tiemco selection.
I hope this trend continues.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
