Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature outside is 69.3 degrees.
We are going to enjoy cooler temperatures this week, with highs in the low to mid-80’s and lows in the low to mid-60’s through at least Thursday. Expect showers and thunderstorms today, mainly before 2 pm. The high chance for rain continues tonight. Rainfall may be heavy and severe storms are possible. Rainfall may reach one inch to two inches today.
Little River is flowing at 127 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 69.1 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River, Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are all flowing near or above normal. Flows are currently very good. Due to the predicted thunderstorms, some rivers may rise today and become stained. Or, it may not happen. If you are fishing in the Smokies today, be aware that quickly rising streams are possible.
Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Though the flows are higher than normal, they are still low. Stealth is essential to your success. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more. Dry flies and nymphs will work.
The lowland rivers exiting the Park are flowing above normal for the most part. It should be overcast at times today, which is beneficial. I would begin using poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies. If there is sun on the water, cast to the shaded areas. If top water flies are not working, try nymphs or streamers. Some rivers may rise and become stained today.
There will be periods of low flow in several tailwaters early today. TVA will be generating at many later. Check the generation schedules on the TVA website by clicking on the links below and plan accordingly.
It should be overcast making this an ideal lake fishing day. The problem is, these thunderstorms may produce strong gusty winds and lightning. I don’t see anything threating on the weather radar right now, but that could happen later. I would launch and fish near the ramp and be ready to run back quickly. Keep an eye on the sky. If you have cell service, watch the radar. You may get missed or you may get hit.
We fish a couple of mountain lakes where thunderstorms appear quickly. They sneak up on us, obscured by the mountains.
A small bear appears at our house frequently. This is not the one that ignores us and is not afraid of people. We have not seen that one in a week or so.
We think this bear was kicked out by its mother recently. He or she looks sad. It has thin hair on the sides of the belly.
Evening before last, the bear walked by the back of our house. We both walked out the front door to see where the bear was going. We walked slowly and cautiously along the porch to the deck and peered around the corner. The bear was in our carport.
We yelled at the bear and it took off, but stopped in the woods and looked back at us. Then it ran away. We can’t help but feel bad for this little bear. It needs to learn to stay away from homes where it could become garbage fed and get into real trouble. Running the bear off is better for it in the long run.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
