Welcome to the Fishing Report form Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:01 am, the temperature outside is 69.6 degrees.
It will be cooler this weekend, with highs today around 84, 80 tomorrow and back to 84 degrees Sunday. Low temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60’s through the period. We can expect rain and thunderstorms today, tonight and tomorrow. There is the potential for heavy rainfall through tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 115 cfs. The water temperature is 70.3 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing slightly lower than normal at the Sevierville gauge. Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing higher than median flow this morning.
The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Trout will be hiding in broken water in riffles, plunge pools and runs. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more. Dress to blend with the forest to help conceal yourself. Dry flies and nymphs will work. A dry fly with a Green Weenie dropper is a good choice. Water levels may rise over the next two days. Be watchful for quickly rising and stained water. The National Weather Service is advising us that flash flooding is possible.
Lowland rivers are flowing low, at least for now. Fish the deeper pools with top water flies, streamers or nymphs. There is a chance some rivers may become stained and flowing higher due to the anticipated thunderstorms today and tomorrow.
There are wade fishing opportunities below some dams this morning in East and Middle Tennessee. Check the TVA website yourself from the links below to plan your day on a tailwater.
Lake fishing is fair. You may have to deal with thunderstorms today and tomorrow. It may be overcast at times, which is beneficial. Hit the banks with foam floating flies, hair bugs and poppers. You may want to try streamers or swimming nymphs if the top water action is slow.
The long term weather forecast through August 28th looks good. It should be cooler with highs in the low to mid 80s and lows in the low to mid 60’s. Scattered thunderstorms are forecasted often through the period. September is not far off. We usually see highs around 80 degrees with lows in the mid 50’s in September. Rainfall in September averages 4.35 inches.
I have four boxes of fly tying materials in my office to be received and displayed. That will take about two days to get done. More are coming. I have a huge order from Whiting Farms that they say will ship soon. Our fly tying suppliers have had a tough time keeping up with demand this year. Order fulfillment seems to be improving.
Daniel and I are working on fly orders to be shipped next year. We are meeting with James, our sales rep for Solitude, one of our fly suppliers today. I talked on the phone to another one yesterday and met with our Umpqua sales rep and their National Sales Manager Wednesday.
We will see the new Scott Rods today.
Fishpond has new gear that we will see soon, probably on a live online presentation. Their entire 2021 lineup will be ready for us to sell in November this year.
This is a busy time of year for us and our sales reps.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
