Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature outside is 70.9 degrees.
It has been raining since about 3 am, though only .30 inches has fallen in Townsend so far. It is breezy. Rain and wind may continue at times today. Heavy rain and strong wind gusts are possible. The high temperature is predicted to be in the low 80’s. There is a lower chance for rain tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 132 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.72 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 93 cfs. The river is beginning to rise slowly right now. The water temperature is 69.9 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing only slightly higher than normal. It is early, so we may see the streams rise soon. Or, maybe they will not. I do not see any significant rain headed our way on the weather radar. That could change of course.
Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler using dry flies or nymphs.
Lowland rivers exiting the Park are flowing slightly higher than normal though the ones I checked this morning are not rising much at all. If we do get heavy rain, these rivers could become stained and rise. At this point, it is hard to say what to expect. Check the USGS gauges before going. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies should work.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be pulsing at times this morning, but there are several wade and boating options on the tailwaters. Check the TVA website to plan your day.
So far, since midnight, wind gusts of up to 11 miles per hour have been recorded in Townsend. Right now, the wind is blowing at 6 miles per hour. If that continues or worsens, lake fishing will be tough today. This may not be a good lake fishing day. If the wind dies, fishing could be fair to good on the lakes. Watch the weather conditions and make that call yourself. I would opt out today from what I am seeing now.
This has been a very wet August in the Tennessee Valley. Rainfall at the Knoxville Airport has amounted to 6.78 inches this month through yesterday. Normal is 3.01 inches. Since June 1st, rainfall is reported to be 13.11 inches compared to normal of 11.90 inches.
Year to date, rainfall has amounted to 49.36 inches, compared to normal of 33.34 inches, a 16.02 surplus.
The rain has ended for now. The wind has died down somewhat. This could turn out to be a good fishing day. I hope so.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
