Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 68.9 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. Thunderstorms are possible this afternoon. Tomorrows forecast is almost identical. Cool air will move into the area this weekend. Highs will be in the low 80’s with lows dipping to the high 50’s to low 60’s. Rain chances are low this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.86 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal.
Fishing conditions in the mountains are unusually good for early September. Water temperatures will fall this weekend. We are expecting lows in the 50’s in the higher elevations, Saturday through Monday. Though it will probably be dry, fishing will improve in the low elevations where you can fish on the larger rivers as the water cools.
The lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Little River looks beautiful through Townsend. Lowland river fishing is good for smallmouth bass and warmwater species. Poppers, hair bugs and foam floating flies are what I would use. Cast to the shaded areas. Fishing will probably be best early and late.
Flows on many of our tailwaters will be good today, though TVA and the Corps will be generating at many dams this afternoon. Check the flow before you go on the TVA website.
Lake fishing is fair to good. It may be overcast today at times, which is beneficial for those fishing the impoundments with flies. I would go early. Fish the banks with hair bugs, foam floating flies or poppers. If that is not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for thunderstorms this afternoon. One weather website predicts an 80% chance. Another puts the chance at 20%. I don’t know who to believe, so be watchful.
Be prepared for the crowds this Labor Day Weekend. This is the unofficial end to the recreational boating season. It is amazing how many less boaters you see on the lakes after Labor Day. Those you do see are mostly fishermen.
The long term weather forecast indicates the cooling trend will continue through September 17th. That is great news. It is going to feel like Fall. Trees are beginning to turn. We are seeing some yellow and red hues in the forest around our home. Leaves and nuts are falling. Spiders are busy building webs.
I don’t know about you, but I am longing for a change and it is coming soon.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
