Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:34 am, the temperature is 61.7 degrees.
Today will be sunny and much cool with a high temperature in the upper 70’s, falling to the high 50’s tonight. It will be sunny tomorrow and Monday with a high in the low to mid 80’s and lows in the low 60’s. What a beautiful weekend this is going to be.
It will be much cooler in the high elevations. Expect a high of 60 degrees and a low of 49 degrees at Mount LeConte today and tonight. At Newfound Gap, the high today is predicted to be in the low 70’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight.
It rained night before last and early yesterday morning with a total accumulation of 360 inches in Townsend. Rain fell in the Smokies, raising water levels and in some cases, staining the streams early.
Little River is flowing at 260 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.15 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 91 cfs. The water temperature is 68.0 degrees this morning and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 400 cfs, 1.97 feet, compared to median flow of 169 cfs for this date. The river is receding.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 453 cfs, 1.75 feet, compared to median flow of 229 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 207 cfs, 1.37 feet, which compares to median flow of 87 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 79.3 cfs, 2.48 feet, compared to median flow of 45 cfs.
Streams flows are excellent, especially in early September when we normally have low water. Water temperatures will fall each night. We could not ask for better weather or fishing conditions over Labor Day Weekend.
Trout will be actively feeding. Dry flies and nymphs will work. Green Weenies are working very well. I got an e-mail from Don yesterday, with a photo of a brook trout that he caught that was in full spawning colors. Another angler I talked to yesterday told me he was catching more trout than he could count. Fishing conditions are excellent in the Smokies. Fishing is very good.
Lowland rivers are flowing at a good level. Smallmouth bass and other species are active. Poppers, foam floating flies and hair bugs will work. It will be sunny each day this weekend. Fishing will be best early or late in some cases. If the river you are fishing is shaded, you should do well all day.
You will find angler friendly flows on many tailwaters this morning. TVA will be generating at most dams this afternoon. Refer to the TVA website to plan your day.
Lake fishing is fair. Go early or late. Expect plenty of recreation boaters on the lakes this Labor Day weekend. I would launch at daybreak and fish until mid-morning. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish with poppers, hair bugs, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. I would plan on pulling out and going home late morning.
Yesterday, I displayed a large selection of Whiting capes in Herbert, High & Dry, Pro and Bronze grades. I bought full and half capes. Whiting hackle has been hard to get this year but right now, we have plenty. I will order more this weekend for delivery in October. I ordered from all of our fly tying suppliers early this week and many orders have been delivered and are displayed. The Firehole order will be delivered today. Umpqua will arrive Monday or Tuesday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
